Literacy Remains High Priority at Markethill High School

A very successful Literacy Evening was held recently in Markethill High School for parents and Year 8 pupils. In his opening remarks the Principal, Mr. James Maxwell reminded everyone of the importance of literacy and its emphasis in the School’s Development Plan. Members of the audience were informed that in Markethill High School, Literacy continues to play an extremely vital role in all subjects across the curriculum and teachers are committed to raising standards in order to empower pupils with essential life skills.

The special guest for the evening was novelist Emma Heatherington from Co. Tyrone who has had seven titles published and a four-book deal with publishing giant Harper Collins. In a lively presentation, which took the form of a workshop, Emma led a master class on techniques to encourage creative writing. This was greatly enjoyed by the entire audience who participated with enthusiasm in all the activities.

Those present were also informed about the success of the Accelerated Reader Programme which has enabled Year 8 and 9 pupils to advance their reading skills over the last few years. The progress of pupils is tracked and monitored extensively by class teachers and special awards are presented when goals are reached by the children.

At the end of a very enjoyable evening everyone had an opportunity to purchase books and items of stationery from the Scholastic Book Fair.
