Science

To a scientist the world is full of questions just waiting to be answered.
 

In the Science Department we aim:
 

  • to develop an enjoyment of, and interest in, Science.

  • to develop an understanding of scientific methods.

  • to teach the essential knowledge and understanding of some of the main areas of Science, and also the skills necessary for pupils to be able to make use of Science in new and changing situations in today’s and tomorrow’s society.

  • to give pupils a scientific training as an appropriate foundation for further study of Science at KS4, A Level and beyond.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN IN YEARS 8-10?

In Years 8 and 9 Science is taught by one teacher and the pupils have 4 periods per week.  The topics taught are a selection from the three main subject areas of Biology, Chemistry and Physics and enable pupils to gain confidence and competence in a range of essential practical skills.

During Year 10 pupils have 6 periods of Science per week and are taught Biology, Chemistry and Physics separately and in greater depth by subject specialists. 

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN AT GCSE LEVEL?

In Years 11 and 12 GCSE Science is compulsory for all classes. Pupils have the option of either studying for Double Award or Single Award Science.
 

Double Award Science (Unitised):
 

This examination is aimed at able candidates who may wish to take ‘A’ levels in any of the three science subjects.

The course is comprised of 6 units, altogether worth 75%.  The remaining 25% is for practical skills.
 

Each tier of entry is aimed at a particular level of ability.  GCSE grades will be awarded as follows:


Foundation Tier: CC - GG

Higher Tier: A*A* - DD
 

Candidates are awarded a pair of grades which are equivalent to two GCSEs.

 

Single Award (Unitised):

This examination is aimed at pupils who do not wish to take ‘A’ levels in any of the three Science subjects.

The course is comprised of 3 units, altogether worth 75%.  The remaining 25% is for practical skills.

There are 2 tiers of entry:

Foundation: Grades C – G

Higher: Grades  A* - D
