The Young Enterprise Company Programme offers students between the ages of 15 to 19 the opportunity to set up and run their own company over the course of one academic year.  Students elect a Board of Directors, raise share capital, market and finance a real product or service of their own choice and sell it to the general public.

Running a Young Enterprise company allows the pupils to develop a wide range of transferable skills including working with others, communication, problem solving and decision making.  It also helps to develop their leadership skills.  All decisions related to the company are made by the Board of Directors (students) with the Link Teacher and Business Advisor providing advice.

This academic year 2011/2012 Markethill High School have two budding companies in Year 11.  All bundled up has been set up with the aim of selling a range of gifts to the public.  The Managing Director Amy Hopps states “Our products range from house-warming gifts to new-born baby presents and are a new innovative way of presenting simple gifts, all bundled up!”  This company has done well so far selling a wide range of high quality products both in school, at a trade fair and in Hunter’s Supermarket, Markethill.

The second company Aspire aims to sell a range of language packages in French and Spanish.  As outlined by Managing Director Laura Marshall “Our aspiration is to teach modern languages to children in the UK and Ireland, as a means of helping them in further education and travel”.  The overall mission statement is to 'Bring the future to the kids, not the kids to the future…' Languages are the future.”  To view this resource and place orders visit the Aspire website at www.aspire-ni.yolasite.com.

So far the students have had the opportunity to attend an induction event where the keynote speaker was Jim Eastwood ‘Jedi Jim’ from The Apprentice.  Jim provided an insight into the application process for the show and also his views of both Enterprise and Entrepreneurship in Northern Ireland.  The pupils were then given the opportunity to meet him in groups to ask questions.  This was a very worthwhile and inspiring event for the pupils and staff!
The students have also had the opportunity to attend the first trade fair in The Outlet, Banbridge.  This was an exciting day where the pupils had the chance to interact and sell their products to the general public.  The pupils enjoyed the day with All Bundled Up selling their products and Aspire seeing some interest in their product.  This exciting day was crowned with the Aspire team being named ‘Best Company’ at the event.

The students are continuing to work hard and are looking forward to the next trade fair on Thursday 9th February 2012 in Rushmere Shopping Centre, Craigavon.
