Controlled Assessments - May 2012

Year 11 pupils will be undertaking a Controlled Assessment task in English on Monday 14^th May. This will take the form of a written assessment on ‘The Study of Spoken Language’ and will be worth 10% of their overall GCSE examination for English Language.

Pupils were introduced to the task on Monday 30^th April, and they will have the equivalent of two weeks for preparation time in class under the supervision of their teacher. The teacher can give feedback to the whole class during the planning and preparation process on how the task is to be completed and how the final work will be marked. It is not permissible for teachers to correct any drafts in the planning stage.

The final assessment will be undertaken under formal conditions in 1 hour 30 minutes in the Assembly Hall.

Pupils may also prepare at home for this assessment task and using two speeches, it is expected that they should be able to:

·        understand the context, purpose, audience

·        analyse the use made of language devices, words and phrases

·        write a detailed response which compares and contrasts both speeches.

The Year 11 ICT classes will be starting Unit 1 Task 3 Controlled Assessment during the month of May.  Most of the task must be carried out in class, however storyboards may be completed at home.  7 ½  hours have been set aside for this task during school time.

Pupils must complete the Controlled Assessment task while supervised by the class teacher.  They will be allowed to bring their notebooks into the classroom.

In preparation for this task pupils have been practising the skills they will need for the Presentation assignment.  Pupils have also completed a sample assignment which it is recommend that pupils practise in preparation for the actual task. 

Any sessions which are missed due to illness will have to be made up after school on a Tuesday through the Controlled Assessment clinic.

From 8^th May to 17^th May 2012 the Year 11 Home Economics: Child Development class will be completing part of their controlled assessment.

In class time for two weeks prior to completing the tasks, the pupils will be working on this topic. It is advised that time is spent at home fully preparing for this as controlled assessment is a major part of overall GCSE in this subject.
