This specification has been developed to give pupils a realistic understanding and experience of construction as part of a broad KS4 programme.

It is designed to enable pupils to develop an authentic working relationship with the real world-of-work.  There is a single tier of entry for this single award subject with grades A* - G being available.


General Aims
·  To provide a broad background understanding and core knowledge of the construction industry.

·  To provide opportunities for progression into further education/training and/or employment in the construction industry.

·  To encourage pupils to apply their developing knowledge in relevant, enjoyable and work related contexts.

·  To help raise levels of achievement through pupils applying their knowledge in work-related situations and contexts.

·  To assist pupils to both develop and practise the key transferable skills which are important in working life.


Specific Aims
·  To develop the knowledge, understanding and skills, both technical and generic, which are associated with work in the construction industry.

·  To begin to develop and apply the practical craft skills used in the construction industry.

·  To explore, in detail the careers of some of the many occupations within the construction industry.

·  To research the materials used in the construction of domestic and commercial buildings.

·  To produce designs for some of the components used in the construction of buildings.

The subject is divided into three assessment units:

Unit 1    The Construction Industry for the 21st century  -  40%
 
This is the final written examination which is externally set and externally marked.

Unit 2  The construction craft project  -  30%
Pupils carry out one craft project under controlled conditions.  This project is externally set and moderated.  A craft project folder is produced to support the practical workpiece.


Unit 3  Computer Aided Design in construction  -  30%
Pupils produce a portfolio of work under controlled conditions.  This is externally moderated.
