In Years 11 and 12 Home Economics: Child Development can be chosen as a GCSE option.

In this course pupils will develop their knowledge and skills through studying a range of different topics. They will also have the opportunity to carry out a variety of practical investigations. The qualification can lead to further study at AS/A Level and/or GNVQ/VCE in a variety of subjects. There will also be career opportunities in nursery nursing, nursing, teaching and the caring professions.

Pupils will study:
* Family and parenting
* Preparation for pregnancy and birth
* Physical development
* Nutrition and health
* Intellectual, social and emotional development
* Community support.

Pupils will learn how to:
* Observe and interact with young children
* Carry out individual, original research;
* Explore and investigate the needs of young children;
* Apply the skills learned in coursework to the examination paper.

Strategies include:
* Practical work investigating the development of children;
* Use of surveys, questionnaires, the Internet and ICT;
* Study of the theoretical aspects of the topics listed above.



Assessment:
Child Development Short Tasks
Candidates submit three short tasks chosen from a list of tasks provided by OCR.

Child Study Task
Candidates submit one individual task chosen from a list of themes provided by OCR.

Principles of Child Development
Candidates are required to answer five compulsory questions, including short answers, picture stimulus, data response, structured and free-response formats. Questions will cover all aspects of the specification content.
